🌿 Golden Beach Community Garden Newsletter – May

May 2025 Edition

Dear Garden Friends,

The cool wet days of April have brought a fresh wave of growth to our community garden—both in plants and in progress! From new donations to updates on funding and projects, here’s everything blooming at GBCG this month.

🌱 Garden Highlights

🌳 Food Forest Edging Completed
The food forest is looking fantastic with its newly completed edging and new plants—thank you to everyone who helped! From Curry Plants to Sweet Potatoes it has it all.

🪱 Compost System Streamlined
Our compost bins are now labelled (full/not full), and the compost bins have been removed from the Food Forest. We’re currently at capacity for compost bins and will reassess numbers as needed.

🧱 New Garden Beds Received
We’ve received 8 new garden beds (4 x 40cm and 4 x 80cm) of which 4 will be added to our leased bed options. More soil and mulch has arrived, with more on the way.
One of the garden beds has been planted out with Medicinal herbs and teas.

🎁 New Donations

  • A gazebo from Barb Cooper
  • A mower and whipper snipper from Tegan and Jon (Ryobi battery compatible—bring yours when you want to move, if you have one!)
  • Concrete tree surrounds.

💧 Irrigation Plans on Hold
Our current bore pump is too small for the irrigation system—discussions are underway about a solution to use the funding from Stocklands Aura.

💰 Grants & Finances

💸 Successful Grant
Approved for $3,000 from the Sunshine Coast Council! 🎉 Currently awaiting the money to hit our bank account. They have funded garden beds.

🙁 Gambling Grant Unsuccessful
We’ll consider applying again, and are also looking into grants from Bendigo Bank, Andrew Wallace, and CommBank.

Hi – I’m on holiday for a week from Melbourne and staying in Nambour. I would love to see some tropical medicinal and edible plants and weeds growing so I can learn to identify them, or join in on meetings and lectures on sustainable gardening.
Would you mind sending me any info you have? I’m familiar with plants growing in Melbourne.
Feel free to pass this to anyone who can help.
